From the early days of the University, alumni have included healthcare pioneers like Edward Jenner, who created the world's first vaccine against smallpox, and Henry Gray, who published the medical textbook "Gray's Anatomy"; to more recent alumni such as Sir Patrick Valance, Chief Scientific Advisor to the Government of the United Kingdom and Professor Hannah Valentine MBBS, first Chief Officer for Scientific Workforce Diversity at the National Institute of Health in Washington, DC.
